The Woodstock Classic, scheduled for October 22, will feature the TACO JUAN 5 mile Hudson Valley Championship road race, the Corinne Amari Memorial 5K Walk, the Rick Carlson Youth Mile and the Doug Maloney Duathlon (new; a 2 mile run, 12 mile bike, and 2 mile run). The event has been run for the past 16 years as the Taco Juan Woodstock race. Participation has recently averaged about 400 competitors, with entrants from NYC to Albany, no doubt in part to the allure of Woodstock and the Fall leaf-peeking season.

John Grant, Taco Juan himself and owner of the boutique eatery in Woodstock that bears his name, feeds upwards of 500 people after the race, including volunteers and spectators, and is well known for his delicious post race buffet.

Leo and Corinne Amari, respected for their efforts as participants and proponents of competitive walking, installed the 5K Walk in 1997, helping make the race a desirable destination for bipeds of every persuasion. Leo has also served as Walk Director for a number of prestigious races throughout the area, including the Kingston Classic, the Labor Day Mad Dash, and the Good Samaritan Sneakers 5K.

The Founders Group for the Classic is truly impressive, and includes the Race Directors of the Hudson Valley’s major races, who have pledged their support to make this a truly memorable event. Politicians and the Press have also volunteered their support. Net proceeds will benefit a local Cancer charity, the CorinneCares Foundation.

After losing a heroic battle with breast cancer, Corinne passed on July 24, 2004. A few months earlier, John began treatment, including chemotherapy, for prostate cancer. Cancer also claimed the lives of both Rick and Doug. Corinne, who held a number of NYS racewalking titles,  John, who routinely won his age group, and Rick and Doug, avid fans and participants,  have been inspiring to all who have known them, especially in the athletic community and the support for this event to help celebrate their lives is overwhelming.
